Description: This is a great activity for you to get to know your students and for students to get to know their peers. First, we traced our foot (without shoes) on a piece of colored construction paper. Then, we cut out the outline with scissors. In the middle of the foot, we wrote our names. Along the outer edge, the students can draw symbols of different things that represent them. It might be helpful to have a list of questions the students can use for ideas (what is your favorite food? what is your favorite color? what sports team do you cheer on?) This assignment required us to use at least 3 different mediums. I used paper, colored pencil, pencil, ink, and paint. The more options you can offer, the more unique each project will be. After I drew and colored different symbols on a separate sheet of paper, I cut them out and glued them along the edge. I also drew a few directly on the foot. Last, each person had to go up to the front to explain what all of their decorations meant in relation to their interests.
Extension Activity: An extension activity that you could do is make a family tree for each student. The students could trace the feet of their parents, siblings, guardians, etc. and decorate them similarly to the one above. Make each of the feet green and cut out a stump and glue them together to resemble a tree. The students can decorate each family member's foot (the leaves of the tree) just like their own to show the interests of each member of their family. It might take a while for each student to go to the front and explain every family member, so keep that in mind when deciding whether to do that.
